Depends on Who’s Asking

Lani Lynn Vale

Release Date: December 8, 2020

About the Book

It was the night before Christmas, and all through the house, not a creature was stirring…nope. No. Nuh-uh. That’s a lie.

The moment that Caro wakes up, she knows that she’s not alone.

One thump-thump from the living room and she quickly moves into action.

One 9-1-1 call later, and she’s ready to defend herself.

Only, she gets more than she bargains for when she steps out into her living room and comes face to face with a living, breathing nightmare.

And isn’t it just fitting that the man that saves her by coming down the chimney with a large black gun in his hand is named Saint Nicholas?

It seemed like the start of a bad joke.

Saint Nicholas comes down the chimney on Christmas Eve night, but he isn’t there to bear gifts. He’s there to take out the trash.

When he lands on his silent feet, he has no other choice but to put himself in harm’s way.

One look at Caro’s terrified face, and he can’t stop himself.

He steps in just as the bullets start flying, saving the damsel in distress and taking a bullet to the shoulder for his trouble.

But one thing he can say is, heroes always win the girl.

And Caro is the best Christmas miracle of all.

This was a fitting ending for this series. I loved Caro and Saint and their story. I loved knowing about Saint's background as a President's kid and growing up with a secret service protection detail. This book starts out with a "pandemic" scare and Caro and Saint have to be quarantined for 3 weeks at Christmastime. I, personally loved this book and would recommend everyone read it with the series. It was awesome to me and Saint was my favorite.

I am so glad I got an ARC of this by Jewel Ann because I've only read a handful of really good books this year and this one was on my list to read. This was an older woman and younger man book that I'd had my eye on because so often it's the opposite that's written about - I don't know why when we read the books and we're older!! I don't want to read about a young girl and older guy lol, so to switch it really made me like it even more. Elsie was a likeable character, as was Kael even though at first I didn't want to like him. It felt like a chore to like him, but I did. If you like books that are well-written and have wonderful development...then this is the book for you. If you love plot driven characters and storylines, then you'll love this book.

Secrets, desires, and exquisite pie. It’s all in a day’s work at The Company.

Growing up, I was the rough guy from the wrong neighborhood who couldn’t catch a break. Posy was the pampered girl I tried to impress. But I managed to steal only a single kiss before I had to skip town.

Now I’m back, and the tables are turned. Posy runs a struggling pie shop. I’m the VP of a secretive billion dollar security company.

Not that I can tell her.

There’s a murderer on the loose in New York, and he seems to spend a lot of time at Posy’s shop. I can’t let on that I’m here to bring him down before he can harm a hair on her pretty head.

Going undercover as Posy’s new barista wasn’t my idea. I don’t even drink coffee. But now I have to call her “boss,” and do everything the curvy perfectionist asks of me. I’d forgotten how much we infuriate each other, and that she somehow fills me with both irritation and desire in the same breath.

There’s nobody more skilled at stealth ops than me. I can bring this killer down. Right after I take a cold shower. And just as soon as I figure out how to make a skinny peppermint latte with milk poured in the shape of a kitten...

Earlier, I’d spotted him even before he came into the bar. I watched him get out of that cab and then check the time. I saw him look toward the pub, weighing his choices.

My heart had thumped along with only one word. Please.

Fine—not my heart. It was other parts of me who were doing all the begging. Silently, of course. Speaking up seems impossible right now. What if he laughs in my face? Or—this might even be worse—what if he says yes? And then we get naked and I can’t satisfy him?

You’re not very adventurous, Spalding said. You’re not very good in bed.

My ex is the only person I’ve ever been naked with. And thanks to him, I’m afraid to try again with someone else. If another man tells me I’m no fun, I don’t know how I’d come back from that.

On the other hand, if I don’t get out of this rut, then Spalding wins. Maybe I sound melodramatic, but I don’t want to die before I experience terrific sex.

It’s really no surprise that my drink disappears quickly.

“Look, you don’t have to tell me what’s on your mind,” Gunnar muses, and I realize I've been silent for some time. “But something has you deep in thought.”

“Rhubarb,” I blurt. “It’s, uh, something I’ve used in springtime pies. But, um, I wonder if I could do better than strawberry rhubarb—that's been done, you know?”

His smile widens. “Is that an occupational hazard? You can't eat or drink anything without reconfiguring it in your mind?”

“Yep.” I wave at the bartender. “Another round of these if you wouldn't mind.”

“Are you trying to get me drunk?” Gunnar asks. “Please say yes.”

My pulse picks up, because it’s hard to miss the innuendo there. But I dodge the question, because I’ve never been brave. “As if two cocktails and a beer would put you under my spell.”

“Oh, I'm easy,” Gunnar says, giving me an intentionally sleazy wink. “Besides, your pies have already made me slow and agreeable. That key lime and Thai basil pie was amazing. That stuff is dangerous.”

“You like my key lime and Thai basil?” I ask, hearing pleasure in my own voice. It never gets old when people tell you how much they like the product. “And I guess it figures that you’d be one of those.”

“One of what?”

“You have an adventurous palate.” I prop an elbow on the bar and try to explain. “People fall into two distinct groups. There’re the ones who always order the weird flavors. And the Dutch apple pie crew, who always stick to the basics. They don’t cross over. It’s something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately.”

Thanks to Spalding. He basically accused me of being a Dutch apple pie in bed. The whole reason I’m reading my sister’s romance novels is to try to learn what the other flavors are like.

“Huh,” Gunnar says. “So, you can just guess which other pies I’ve tried?”

“Sure, I can. Did you try the pine nut and salted honey?”

“Oh, hell yes.”

My smile grows wide. “How about the matcha green tea tart?”

“Well,” he shakes his head, “I gotta say I haven't quite gone there yet. But I did enjoy the vinegar date pie.”

“Ah! And the ginger mango cream, right?” I press.

“Yeah. Does that make me predictable?”

“A little bit,” I say, enjoying myself immensely. “Have you started doing that thing where you try to guess each customer’s guilty pleasure?”

He laughs. “Get out of my head. It's my new favorite game.”

“How's your accuracy?”

“Pretty bad. I started off trying to use clothing as a clue. I expected somebody wearing a navy blue suit and boring shoes to order the apple crumble. But that theory bombed. And then I tried to assume that people in workout clothes wouldn’t pick something sugary. But they totally do.”

“You have to look deep inside their souls,” I tease. “If you look at the shell of a person, you'll never get their pie order right. In fact, you have to look at their auras.”

He snorts. “What color is my aura?”

“Indigo, like tattoo ink. But with a streak of red because you’re contrary.”

He narrows his eyes. “You’re just fucking with me now.”

“Maybe I am.”

“Okay, lady. But I have an issue with something you said earlier.”

Guilty pleasures.” He lays a hand over my wrist. “I don’t believe in those. I don’t think pleasure should make you feel guilty.”

“Oh.” He’s barely touching me, but goosebumps run up my arm anyway. Now would be a great time to make a joke and diffuse all the tension I’m suddenly feeling. But I feel too tongue-tied to pull it off.

Gunnar removes his hand, which is a disappointment. But the next thing he says stuns me back into goosebump territory. “You know, I always had it bad for you.”

“You … what?” I ask stupidly.

“Back when we were tending bar, I had a big crush on you. And sometimes I thought you were on the same page. I usually have good instincts about these things. But not that time. You ended up with Mr. Pretty Boy Preppy instead.”

My heart is thumping wildly now, and I take a sip of my cocktail to steady my nerves. The truth is that I don’t really trust this little revelation. We used to annoy each other, for one thing. But maybe that didn’t matter to Gunnar’s libido. He was a horny college boy. He probably had it bad for all the girls.

Still. “What if I’m the one who has terrible instincts? Did you ever think of that? And did you miss the part where I divorced Mr. Preppy?”

“Mmm,” he says thoughtfully. “I suppose that might explain a few things.”

“You’re the one who left, anyway.”

His eyes narrow. “Do you really think if I’d stuck around, things would have turned out differently? I spent three months giving you the fuck-me eyes, Paxton. But you didn’t take me up on it.”

Oh mother of God. His gaze is turning hot, and I think it might incinerate me. And then I remember why we never hooked up in the first place.

This was a really good book that I've been waiting for what seems like forever!! I loved it. It had an awesome storyline and the characters I loved them together.  This is a great part of the ones we've been reading. Great job Sarina.

“H. Hunting pens a heartbreaking tale that leaves readers absolutely breathless from beginning to end. One of her best books yet!”

I never loved you.

And I cut her down.
Shoved the blade in and watched her fall.

Years later, I’m faced with all the little lies, the untruths, the false realities, the damage I inflicted, when all I wanted was to indulge my obsession.
Lavender Waters is the princess in the tower. Even her name is the thing fairy tales are made of.
I used to be the one who saved her.
Over and over again.
But I don’t want to save her anymore.
I just want to pretend the lies are still the truth.

The front door swings open, and the never-ending nightmare that is this day smacks me in the face like a long-expired sausage. Kodiak stands in the doorway wearing only a pair of swim shorts, wet hair sticking out all over the place, water dripping on the damn floor. But God, is he ever glorious. Muscle layered over muscle, thick biceps flexing as he holds the doorjamb, a mischievous grin popping the dimple in his left cheek.
My heart seizes and gallops. I miss this version of him: the one that smiles and doesn’t hate me.
He ruins everything a moment later by bellowing, “Who’s fucking in the driveway?”
His gaze moves to Dylan, who looks as horrified as I feel, but as it shifts to me, his smile drops and my stomach tightens.
“You should really go,” I tell Dylan.
“I’ll see you around.” He disappears into his car and barely has the door closed before he’s backing out of the driveway and screeching down the street.
I adjust my backpack on my shoulder and head for the house, steeling my spine and my nerves because Kodiak is still standing in the middle of the doorway, his face a mask of indifference. I try to brush by him, but he stays where he is, making it impossible.
I sigh, exhausted beyond belief. I just want to go upstairs and have a good, cathartic cry. I try to mirror his apathy. “Can you move so I can get into my house?”
His brow furrows as his eyes move over my face. He lifts his hand, like maybe he’s thinking about touching me. There’s no way I can handle that. I jerk back and swat his hand away. “What are you doing?”
“Your lip is bleeding.”
“Don’t act like you actually give a shit, Kodiak.”
“Tell me what happened.” His voice is low and soft, and for whatever reason, that makes me even angrier, so I lash out, wanting to wound him the way he keeps wounding me.
“You, Kodiak. You happened, and you ruined my goddamn life. Now get the hell out of my way.” I elbow past him, almost tripping over several sets of running shoes.
I head straight for my bedroom and lock the door behind me. I slide down the wall until my butt hits the floor and close my eyes, taking deep breaths.
I imagined the concern in his voice.
I imagined the pain that sat heavy behind his eyes.
We see what we want to, not the truth, especially when it hurts.

This was a really great book and it took me out of reality for just a little while, which is what I needed. It was different than what I thought it would be, but just as good as all her other books. I really prefer her writing this way. Everyone should pick this one up!! I'm not giving any spoilers as I never do.

Not everything is about romance, sometimes it's about attitudes!

For about 6 or 7 months I haven't really been able to read. Let me tell you a little about this. My usual genre is contemporary romance or womens fiction and now with the political climate, coronavirus, and just downright hate in the world the one thing I love most I haven't been able to do. You might be saying to yourself "suck it up, it's just reading" but it's not. It's something that so many women do for fun. They do it to recommend to friends and family and they do it to relax from the day. Some of us haven't relaxed since 2020 began. I'll be really honest about something else - I'm probably guilty of reading half your book and 3-5 starring it and calling it a day because we've been told to. PR companies really just want the stars and don't care about the contents. I know because I've actually been told this that it doesn't matter as long as I just put something in the review and throw 5 stars on it and to be perfectly honest I just don't love this genre anymore. What started out as something fun has turned into a drama llama and I hate that. Authors arguing with fans and fans boycotting authors, authors no longer caring if the fans that made them who they are even bought their books because it doesn't fit in to their political narrative. Authors spreading hate on twitter because they can and then their Twitter posse can bully whomever they want. THIS is not what I signed up for. I signed up to read books, talk books and share a love of books with women of like mind when it comes to BOOKS. Not this cancel culture of hate that we have going on. We have CD Reiss who is attacking conservative all day every day and they are her READERS?! Why do you think that your PR company that handles your books keeps sending emails for ARCs - because you are setting yourself on fire. I don't care what your political affiliation is but calling your readers dumb is shooting yourself in the foot.

THIS is what is wrong with Facebook and Twitter today, along with indie publishing. At least, with traditional publishing those publishing houses hold you accountable. I'm so disenfranchised by what I've read and heard authors say this year that, no I don't want to read your books. It's any free speech. If we say we didn't like a storyline because we felt that it wasn't true to life, you feel you have the write to email and tell us that you couldn't care less what we think and don't read it. Since when did authors start doing this? Is this the new norm now? Feeling that you're better because you "write some words" and some just aren't good. Anybody can throw 75 percent worth of sexual content into a book and call it a work of art especially if you're the one calling it art.

I've decided that a genre switch for a while is in order and it may last a month or it may last a year. I don't know. I just know that burnout on authors who I used to enjoy reading and who I used to enjoy interacting with - I just don't anymore and maybe it's because I changed as a person. Maybe I grew and decided that I wanted more out of the reading material than they could give. We grow and mature as people and just sitting back watching some things in the book community has made me realize that I'd rather just be a reader on the outside because the drama on the inside isn't worth the books that are being put out.

Noble Prince by Devney Perry is now live!

The night Luke Rosen met Scarlett Marks was the only time he's regretted becoming chief of police. One horrific night of blood and death, and now she's living under his roof--all because he swore an oath to serve and protect.
Scarlett is stubborn and infuriating. She has no respect for the order in his structured life, and she never does anything she's told. Worse, she doesn't seem to care that the information she has on a motorcycle gang means she might end up dead. But her unwavering strength, her courage and tenacity and beauty, makes it impossible for him to abandon her.
If Luke is going to keep her safe, he'll have to make the hardest decision of his life. He can either honor his values as a cop, knowing Scarlett is unlikely to survive . . . or he can break all the rules and protect the woman who's invaded his home and his heart.

I loved Luke and Scarlett. Their story is one of the ones I've been waiting for and the one leading up to it. I always love Devney's books so much because when I'm in a rut I can always count on her to bring me out. This had some mystery and intrigue to it and Scarlett just didn't know how much trouble she was actually in in this book, but I love the way it played out. I'm not letting out any spoilers. I never do because I don't like to read reviews where there's a lot of information so I'm left not having to read the book. All I will say is that this was definitely 4.5 stars for me.

Nobody Knows

Lani Lynn Vale

Release Date: November 10, 2020

About the Book

All he ever wanted was to matter to someone. What he didn’t know was that he did matter to someone. Someone that worried about him every single day that he was gone.

Malachi Gabriel Gnocchi was missing for two years. Thanks to a mission gone wrong, not only had he been captured, but his best friend along with his fellow teammates had been taken, too.

He spent two years in hell, hoping and praying that one day he’d get to go home.

And one day he does. Only, he isn’t the same person that left. Every single thing that made him Malachi is no more.

Sierra started writing to soldiers overseas through the soldier pen pal program when she was in high school. Years later, she had no idea that the one soldier that she’d been paired up with in the very beginning would be the one man that would change her world eight years down the road.

When the letters from her soldier stopped, she knew that something bad had happened.

When they started back up again two years after the last letter, she thought that someone was playing a joke on her. Only, that joke wasn’t a joke at all.

The man on the other end of those letters is a man that’s dying slowly from the inside out. He’s a living, breathing, mess and there’s only one thing she can do to help him. Write him back and hope that she can bring him back from the edge.

I have been waiting for Malachi "Gabriel" Gnocchi's story since we read Luca's when it was believed that HE was really Malachi and that the real Malachi was dead. I know, I know that is sooo confusing but if you've been reading these books and the series then you are caught up. Gabriel was broody through the series and with right. He was a POW and had a lot of scars, Sierra was a light in the darkness who wrote letters to soldiers and when the letters from him stopped she thought nothing of it only to find out later that he had been taken as a prisoner of war. When Sierra comes into his life she is like a breath of fresh air and makes all the difference in the world. The darkness that he used to see isn't so dark anymore but neither of them know that they have a connection from the past. He doesn't know that she used to write to him and she doesn't know that he used to be Malachi since he's only been Gabriel. What are they going to do when the other finds out who the other one is? Will Gabriel let Sierra see that dark side of him? I have really come to love this series and I'm gonna hate that it's coming to an end. I give LLV 5 stars on this one overall. Probably 4.5 for predictability but I still loved it.

About the Book

Going from a professional baseball player to a SWAT officer should’ve been seamless. Should have been. But it wasn’t. All it took was one single calendar shoot for word to spread that Nathan Cox was not only no longer playing professional baseball, but he was also the man behind saving the life of Reggie Morton, the City of Kilgore’s princess.

Reggie didn’t know that by agreeing to provide the expertise and the know-how for the Police Officer’s Ball that she would be required to actually attend the function. What she also didn’t expect was needing to be saved—again—by the same man that had saved her life a year ago when she hosted her debut event. This time in a not-nearly-as-spectacular way. The moment she falls into his arms like a modern-day Cinderella and takes him in in all his three-piece suited glory, she realizes that she’s been fighting the impossible. Nathan Cox owns her. Body and soul.

I loved Nathan and Reggie. They were best friends as children, fought like cats and dogs as teenagers and then as adults they still had a little snap, crackle pop in them all the way through the book. This is the LLV of the good ole days and I've really enjoyed this whole series. I've loved being able to see the kids grow up and the parents get older and the intermingled storytelling. That's my favorite part of her books. I thought she did a great job at this.

Say It Ain’t So

Lani Lynn Vale

Release Date: September 8, 2020

About the Book

He should’ve never left his house. He should’ve stayed at home. He has a legitimate excuse—he’s running a fever and he’s fairly sure he’s developing pneumonia. He should have called in sick…but he doesn’t. He goes to work, because his team is relying on him. First, he has to sign about eight thousand calendars—all from women who purchased said calendars to benefit the Fallen Officer fundraiser. And when he’s done with that, he has to endure a television interview along with the rest of the SWAT team seeing as they made national news with their ‘Hot SWAT’ calendar that’s sold a million copies to women all over the world. Needless to say, when Samuel Adams walks into the pharmacy hours later, he only has one thing on his mind. Ibuprofen. Sadly, he never gets to the Ibuprofen. Mostly because before he gets there, he finds a junkie waving a gun around threatening to kill anybody that moves.  He’s running a fever. That has to be the reason that the girl in the corner begins cursing up a storm and drawing the junkie’s attention. Has to be.

Stop it, stop it, stop it! She tells herself to take a deep breath. Tells herself that she needs to calm down. Tells herself that if she doesn’t get her act under control, things are going to get ugly. And, of course, that’s when the curse words start flying. The more nervous she gets, the worse her Tourette’s becomes. Which is, of course, why she stands up and gives the man a perfect target. Thank God that the coughing giant in the corner makes the same move and saves her life. And how does she repay him? By calling him every awful word in the dictionary. Thank you, Tourette’s.

I have loved this series and that speaks loudly in and of itself. I am enjoying all the characters and the overlapping of series that we've gotten to see. I think that this has been one of LLV's best yet.

Review: Wild Highway

Wild Highway Wild Highway by Devney Perry
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I read the first book in the series and loved it. This book was also just as great. I've needed something to keep my mind off life and this was what I needed. Gemma and Easton were not the easiest couple. In fact, she literally runs in to him on her way back into town and he's kind of a jerk to her. That's not to say that he doesn't have a good reason though. Devney always puts her characters from previous books in her new books, which is what I love about her. She knows how to write hometown romance like nobody's business. This was another 5-star for me!!
